I read this one a couple of months ago. I don’t remember any characters with distinction — just a vague impression. The main character is a prodigal daughter type, returning home to deal with the estate after her mother dies, and of course that morphs into her dealing with all the emotional shit she’s been avoiding. You can run but you can’t hide, or wherever you go there you are, or something like that.
“You thought if you knew enough, nothing would ever catch you off guard. You liked things mapped out, predictable, safe.”
There’s a plot which involves an old, unsolved murder and amateur sleuthing, mild magic and community ostracism. A little romance sprinkled in there, too. But the real plot is a woman coming to terms with her family history and herself.
“It’s easier to be prickly than to be vulnerable, to distract with harsh words rather than show our bruises. But we must do the hard things. That is the work of healing.”
Good pick if you want an easy weekend read, and you’re not overly picky about transitions and tropes, and you would like to sort through some mother-daughter issues.
